Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

This years theme is slavery. The above painting is titled ‘Brothers’. On a pier in Cape Verde there was a large wooden brightly painted wooden crate with two boys sitting inside. It was a storage crate and had a chain attached (maybe to act as an anchor ). Cape Verde was formerly a slave trading island and I had a subliminal feeling from this striking image before me. The brothers gladly sat there for twenty or so minutes whist I made drawings, later made into the above oil painting. I deliberately blanked out facial features to emphasise how slaves were treated as non human commodities.
